BUSH FIRES IN AUSTRALIA.

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE REPORTED. PUT OUT BY HEAVY RAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received March 16, 11.10 p.m. Melbourne, March 16The bush fires have been extinguished 'by hea'vy rain after sweeping through almost the whole of Gippsland with deVastating effect. They were the worst since the great fires of 1889. Women and children had to be taken- into the towns for safety. Many districts had all communications cut, and the township of Foster was only Saved with difficulty. A railway train in a beech forest taught fire, and was compelled to continue at full speed until water was reached, when the fire extinguished. Although the damage is extensive, details so far are meagre.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
