NAURU AND PAPUA.
A SUPPLEMENTARY VOTE. EXPENDITURE EXLAINED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, March 11. Colonel Amery, explaining the supplementary Colonial Office, vote of £45,000, explained/that £30,000 was for payment of stamp duty on the Nauru agreement, and the balance was the British Government’s share due to the Anglo-Persian Company for exploring for oil in Papua. Captain Ortnsby-Gore moved * reduction of the vote, and complained that the Government’s activities seemed to be confined to dyes, manures and oils. Replying to Lord Robert Cecil, Colonel Amery said the company only received out-of-pocket expenses. The Admiralty induced the British and Australian Governments to prospect Papua. The amendment was withdrawn and the vote passed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
