RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE DOMINION MEETING THE KING’S PRIZE. WON BY E. E. VENNELL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In a bluster'ng afternoon the final test tc decide who should have the honor of hold • ing the rifle championship of New Zealand for l'J2l was fired in the presence of the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe, General Sir Edward Chaytor, and other military officials, and a fair sprinkling of the public. Promptly at 3 o’clock th© <men went to the mounds, and Thomas, on target ten, got to business at once with a bull’s eye, but his succeeding shots, though nearly all on the target, were only of moderate value, and as he was low in the aggregate, did not help him much. Interest, of course, centred around the three top men—Vennell (target 9), Croxton (on 11), and Nielson (on 14) —who started level with 513 points each. The progress of Vennell and Croxton was watched closely. Vennell’s sighter was 5 and CroXton’s 3. Vennell's next shots read 2,5, 4,3, and Croxton's 5,5, 2,3, 0, so that Vennell had a lead of four and half the journey done. Vennell then forged ahead with 5,0, 5,2, 5, compared with Croxton’s 2,3, 2,4, 0, giving the Tewharau man a total for the range of 36, and an aggregate of 459. Meantime, Nielson, who got a atart slowly, had kept, up all his counters on th© target for a total of 30, and thus got second place. Be had a miss for a sighter, and then the board read 2,4, 2,3, 2,2, 5,4, 3, 3. Donald, of Opaki had a mixture of good hits and misses, finishing with a range total of 30 and an aggregate of 539, disputing third place with Croxton, who won th© shoot-off later. Three men -•Henry, Armstrong and Bryden—also tied for twenty-fifth place, carrying the last badge, and Bryden got it in the shoot-off with Arunstrong, Henry having meanwhile left the mound. / The following are the details of the King’s Prize match, ten shots at 1000 yards, open to the fifty tighest aggregate scorers In the Belt series:— Ballinger Belt, gold medal, gold badge, and £so—Vennell, E.
