THE TREATY MODIFIED. military to evacuate GUARANTEES TO ARMENIA. By Tolegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 11, 5.5 p.m. London, March 10. The Greeks have substantially accepted the terms cabled, subject to certain modifications. Sami Bey returns to Angora to consult his Government, and the Greeks are also returning to obtain the sanction of their Government. The Supreme Council will remain in session until it hears the result. The Daily Chronicle says the modifications of the Sevres Treaty include the Allied evacuation of Constantinople and the de-militarisation of the Straits, the Allied garrisons being maintained only at Gallipoli and Chanak. The Turks will be allowed to co-operate with the Allied financial control commission? The Turkish sovereignty over Smyrna will be maintained by the flying of the Turkish flag, and the Turks will be guaranteed free use of the ports of Smyrna. Both elements of the population have interests to be safeguarded. The independence of Armenia will be fully guaranteed. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. London, March 10. It is understood that Mr. Lloyd George, on behalf of Britain, suggested modifications of the Turkish Treaty, particularly in regard to the military and financial clauses, the delimitation of the Straits area and also the clauses relating to Smyrna in the direction of maintaining Turkish sovereignty, while providing adequate representation for the interests of both the Turkish and Greek population. It was agreed that M.. Briand and Signor Sforza should submit the suggestions to the Turks, while Mr. Lloyd George and Lord Curzon submitted them to the Greeks. After receiving the proposals both delegations obtained time to consider them. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
