BUTTER PRICES.
COMMITTEE MEETS 1N WELLINGTON. The Butter Committee met in Wellington on Thursday, at the request of the Director of Agriculture (Dr. Reakes), to consider the disposal of New Zealand's butter after the close of the Imperial contract at the end of th' month. The members of the committee, after considerable disepssion, interviewed the Prime Minister, but no definite conclusions have yet been reached. More information is required as tp the probable condition, of the London market after this month. The producers at present are receiving about 2s 6d per pound for their butter, and the Government is paying a subsidy of 6d per pound on butter consumed in New Zealand in order that consumers may buy at 2s 3d per lb retail. This arrangement allows 3d per pound for handling charges and retailers’ profit- The producers are likely to receive a substantially smaller price after this month, but the withdrawal of the subsidy, which the Government is unlikely to continue, will absorb a part, or possibly the whole of the reduction. The local retail price will not fall to the same extent as the •export price .—Dominion.
