During January 49 men were employed at the east endtrof the Stratford railway and 74 were employed at the west end. The number of men engaged on the GjAinake line was 36. On road works there were 17'3 men engaged by the Public Works Department at Stratford.

The New Plymouth police received information yesterday to the effect that two youths, who were arrested recently in Auckland on several charges of theft, were found to be in possession of property stolen from New Plymouth some time ago. The property was identified by means of a name found in a wallet, one of the stolen articles. A wristlet watch, a silver watch chain, a gold ring, £2 2s fid in cash, curios, a basket, a wallet, an albert chain, and some coins, stolen from the dwellings of Mr. W. Ambury, of New Plymouth, and Mr. E. J. Cloqgh, of Lower rei, were found in the youths’ possession. The majority of the articles, but no cash, were recovered by the owners. The youths were convicted and admitted to probation for one year, being ordered to make restitution to Mr. Ambury to the amount of £'7 and to Mr. Clough to the sum of £2 2s fid.

On Tuesday at 1.30 L. A. Nolan and Co. will submit to auction, on account of Mr. F. Orbell, his furniture and effects. The sale will be held at the residence adjoining Infant School, Courtenay Street.
