THE LATE MR. POWDRELL.
The somewhat sudden death of Mr. W. D. Powdrell, M.P. for is a distinct loss to Taranaki in particular and the Dominion in general, and will be generally deplored. He was one of the strongest personalities in the province in the development of which he toox an active and enthusiastic part. From the very beginning he had the greatest confidence in its future, and proved it by his works in many directions. He rose to direct many of the most important southern activities, achieving success in whatever he put his hand to. Few men led a busier life; yet he found time to help his fellows in a variety of ways; also to engage in public duties. He never spared himself, his chief concern being the welfare of the producers and of the community generally. At last election he was pressed to contest the Patea seat, and, notwithstanding the tremendous calls- upon his time and Strength, he consented. His election was regarded by many as the first .«tep in a brilliant political career. Biit this was not to be. He was a man of strong convictions, high principles, benevolent instincts, unswerving loyalty to his district, and a model husband and father, and the country is the. poorer by his demise at an age so comparatively early. We join in thd condolence offered his widow and family in the great loss they, as well as the district he served so faithfully, have sustained.
