Antartan was beaten at the half-mile. Berribee jumped eratically in the Steeples, but won easily. In the Australian Cup, The Rover, although last to get away, by which he lost three had the race won a long way from home and scorefl rather easily, covering the distance half a second outside the record time. T.J.C. DISTRICT COMMITTEE. I COURSE IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. A meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club committee was held last night. Present : Messrs. L. A. Nolan (chairman), G. Fraser, O. W. Sole, F. Orbell, L. B. Webster, W. F. Nicoll, A. R. Standish, B. H. Chaney, and W. T. 'Hookham. An apology for absence was received from Mr. J. McLeod. The question of improvements to the course was considered, and the sub-coimmittee’s report in connection with their recent visit to the Manawatu, Feilding, and other club's courses was read. It was decided to. adhere to the original plan of improvements, and to instruct the club’s engineers »to prepare the necessary specifications for carrying out the work as soon at> possible. The first work to be commenced will be filling in the gully near the seven furlongs post, but it was pointed out that although the work could be put In hand almost Immediateley, it would be at least three or four years before the comprehensive scheme was completed. TURF TOPICS. 1 (By “Moturoa.") Marlborough and Southland races ‘ to-mor-row. Acceptances for the Opunake meeting close at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The Napier Park autumn meeting takes place on Friday and Saturday. Lord Usk won three races at Nelson, and more good money awaits him at Blenheim. Stork’s complete failure in the Hack Cup at Te Aroha was a facer for his army of followers. If was a bit of a win for the Akaroa Racing Club to hold its meeting on the Riccarton course, and the tote, turnover jumped from £18,311 to over £30,000. The hurdlers seen out at most of the country meetings in the Auckland province are of the poorest quality, and any decent Taranaki hack would clean 'em up. When, this scribe goes in for a racehorse he will call It Mangham. Anything that can give a Gioaiming three furlongs start and a beating over a mile will do me I If a contemporary is to be believed big money awaits the winner of the Maiden Handicap at Bulls. This is what our contemporary states are the conditions of the race: "Second horse to receive 30 sovs. from the stake 123456 23456 23456." Swift Flight, wto ran into the money at Te Aroha on Monday, is an English-bred horse. His form in the Old Dart was nothing to rave about, and his gallops at Ellerslie have not been impressive. However, he is sure to improve with racing.
Some old-fashioned people still find fault with the electric totalisator, and at Wanganui the other day there were complaints that tte machine was not registering correctly. To ascertain If there was any truth in the allegation the writer, interviewed an official of the club, who spent all the time In the tote house, and I have his assurance that everything worked without a hitch, the numbers being registered instantaneously, and without* a single error. Much needed rain fell at Bulls on Monday, and the course should be much benefited thereby. "Ernie” Morse has been working early and late to get the tracks ready for the forthcoming meeting, but the long spell of dry weather has proved almost heart-break-ing. It is reported that Secretary Harry Goodall, and "J. 8. Gaisford, and one or ‘two other enthusiastic members of the club, wore tie. knees out of their trousers on Sunday, and evidently their prayers have been rewarded.
Mention of "J.B.’’—that good sport who raced Mattock and Celmisia at New Plymouth >at Christmas—reminds me that his brother,
"Stumpy” Gaisford, was amongst the successful speed kings seen out at' the motor sports here on Saturday. "Stumpy" is a. quiet, unassuming fellow, who never blows his own trumpet, and his successes are always popular. He was accompanied by his mascots, "Ponty” and "Jacko,” and all appeared to enjoy the trip. Tie Wa.verley Racing Club’s new grandstand is now nearing completion, the contractor, Mr. Wren, having the work well up to contract time. It is an imposing structure, of concrete, and is 150 feet long, with concrete ~step’s in front. When completed it will i be the most up-to-date structure of its kind on the coast. The racing track has also- received attention, sqme thirteen chains having been ’aised and embanked near the enttance to tl.< straight, while two chains in tbe straight have been cut down and levelled. T' e work Was done under the supervision of Mr. Herbert Morse, whose work for the Egmont Racing Club has been so favorably commented upon. The old four furlongs (straight) track at Waverley has been done away with.
