COUNCIL AND ITS CLERK.
INGLEWOOD TROUBLE REVIVED. NEW APPOINTMENT MADE. The recent dismissal of the clerk was again discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the Inglewood County Council. When the minutes of the previous meeting were read the chairman (Cr. A. Corkill) moved their adoption with certain exceptions. These referred to the remarks of Cr. Simpson in support of his motion to rescind the former resolution of the council to dismiss the clerk, and those of Cr. Hunter in seconding. The chairman moved that the formal motion and seconding only be allowed to stand. The chairman’s motion was seconded by Cr. Hair, and what the chairman characterised as matter” was expunged from the minute book. Later in the meeting, Cr. Simpson asked the chairman to explain his remarks made at the October meeting that “some of the councillors were behind the clerk’s back.” He wanted to know the names of the councillors to whom this referred. The chairman refused to discuss the matter further, and the correspondence was then dealt with. However, the question again came up during the afternoon, when the appointment of a new clerk was announced* Cr. Simpson argued that a committee of the council could not alone make the appointment without consulting the council as a whole. The chairman replied that a meeting of the council had been held to deal with the question, and it was Cr. Simpson’s fault if he had not attended. 1 Cr. Simpson then moved a motion not agreeing with the recommendation of the committee regarding the appointment of the new clerk, and suggesting that Mr Lloyd be re-appointed at a salary of £'3so per year, such salary to include payment for’all clerical work incidental to’the work of the county. ,Cr. Hunter seconded, but, bn a division, the motion, was lost. The division resulted: — For (3)—Crs. Simpson, Hunter and Capper. , Against (s)—The chairman, and 4>rs. Stewart, .Tones, Cowley and Hair. Cr. Topping did not vote. A further motion confirming the ac* tion of the committee in appointing a new clerk was carried by 6 votes to 3.
