PUKEKURA PARK BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING.. The Pukekura Park Board met last night. Present: Mr. C. E. Bellringer (chairman), Mrs. C H. Burgess, Messrs. W. C. Weston, R. C. Hughes and A. S. Brooker. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. P. E. Stainton and H. Ford. In connection with the proposal of the Acclimatisation Society to erect a hatchery in the park, the chairman reported that a sub-committe’e had met representatives of the society, and a site for the building had been decided on, at a spot towards the left of the waterfall. The society intended to construct the building in Maori whare style, and it should prove a fine 'addition to the 4jark, as well as serving the purpose of a hatchery. The chairman reported having visited the grounds, and that general maintenance work was being kept well up to date. The matter of cleaning out the lake was receiving attention, as there had been some growth of weeds, and also silting. In the course of his visit he had found that a puriri tree near the Gilbert, Street entrance had been barked by some children, and this would probably result in the ultimate destruction of the tree. During the discussion on the chairman’s report. Mrs. Burgess expressed the opinion that children should be taught that the grounds were their park, and to protect it, and this might have a beneficial result in checking theyounger ones from destroying the plants and trees. In reply to Mr. Brooker, the chairman said that no steps had been taken in the direction of procuring the services of a curator as the salary required and a residence, which wpuld have to be found, were beyond the means of the board. In view of the fact that a number of members were absent it was agreed to defer final consideration of the motion in favor of municipal control of ’‘the park which was recently brought up by Mrs. Burgess.
