The amusing ignorance of a great number of people abroad concerning New Zealand is well illustrated by a letter received by a Christchurch lady thanking her for some post-cards she sent to a girl in Washington, U.S.A. The writer of the letter has had a college education ,and is at present secretary to a high Government official. She says: “I was delighted with the cards. I had no idea New Zealand was settled as much as the cards show. Christchurch certainly must be a large city. I would like to know more about the country and ways of living, if like ours. What nationality are the majority of people there? Is the English or Spanish language spoken universally? I am asking many questions, but curiosity is running away with me. Another question in which I am very much interested is religion. What form or kind do you have? I read that years ago the people worshipped idols, but do they have the Protestant religion now?” |
