LIGHTHOUSE EQUIPMENT.
ALLEGED GERMAN CONTRACT. DENIAL BY PRIME MINISTER. An allegation that 'a contract for lighthouse equipment for the Dominion had been let to a German firm was brought under the notice of the Prime Minister at Auckland. Mr. Massey denied any knowledge of it. The. statement, which was published in the Daily Chronicle, London, in January, was as follows: —“How contracts are lost to this country is illustrated by quotations received in New Zealand in connection with lighthouse equipment. The British tender for this work was £3OOO Without any guaranteed time of delivery. As delivery in a specified time was required, a German firm was approached and quoted £BOO less for the same work, with a penalty clause attached regarding delivery.” Mr. Massey said it would hardly be possible for this to occur without his knowledge. He added: “I have never heard of it, and I don’t think it is correct, because all departments have been notified that in all cases preference must be given to British-manufac-tured goods. I do not see how such a thing could have got past me, and I am certain that no such tender has been accepted.
