THE SUGAR SITUATION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Sydney, March 5. Mr. Greene, Minister of Customs, reviewing the sugar situation, stated that there was no prospect of a reduction inside a year. FEDERAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT. Sydney, March 5. Referring to the new Federal Health Department, Mr, Greene, who is Minister in Charge, stated that the Government was anxious to establish laboratories in various centres to serve as distributing depots fy serums manufactured by the Government., STATE SMELTERS CLOSED. Brisbane, March 4. Owing to the slump in metal prices the Government has closed the State smelters at Rendering idle 1500 men « PRICE OF MILK. Sydney, March 4. The Anti-Profiteering Court -decided that farmers anfi. distributors may fix the price of milk amongst themselves, but must leave the price to the householders unchanged. As the result of milk shortage all the milk employees in the city have been given a week’s notice. It is expected there will be at least 1000 rendered idle. A SHIPBUILDING QUESTION. Melbourne, March 5. A Wafsh Island deputation requested Mr. Poynton to have one of the three ships under costruction allotted to Walsh Island, to prevent unemployment. The Minister replied that he was allowed three millions only, which were just sufficient to keep two dockyards going He was unable to spread it over a third without working the three only eight months in the year. —Aus.-N.Z.
