HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawera County Council met on Saturday. Present: Councillors C. J. Hawken, R. J. Linn, E. A. Washer, A. Larcom, J. Dunlop, R. Douglas and B. C. Lysaght. An apology for absence was received from the chairman (Cr. J. B. Murdoch) and Cr. Hawken was voted to the chair. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The county foreman (All-. A. Muggeridge) reported as follows Ngawhini Road.-rA start has been made with the metalling of the road and about ten chains have been done. During the present month we are hoping to finish what has been authorised. Lysaght Road.—The nine chains on the hill on this road is now completed and the team is dumping metal on the road alongside of the pit in readiness for patching wherever it is required. Ohangai Road. —The finishing coat of tar has been applied to this road on the grouted portion and the scarifier is now putting the Tangahoe hill in order so that it can be tarred. This will be done next week.
Main South Road, Mokoia.—This road has been top dressed from Mokoia to the Whareroa Road and will shortly be finished to the borough boundary. When this work is finished that will be all the tarring that can be done in the Ararata or Mokoia ridings. There are about 800 yards of stone pulled up from the beach at the Waokena in readiness for crushing. Councillor Linn and myself bought a good horse for £6O and it is now at work carting metal from Mr. Mathis’ pit. Matangara Road.—As instructed I have examined this road and the pit on Mr. Brewer’s property. It will cost about £ 100 for earth formation and the metal would cost 8s per yard delivered on the road and is about the same quality as that which was procured from Mr. Clout’s pit. It should last on the road for a considerable time. Kotukutuku Bridge.—The piers of this bridge are now completed and the woodwork is on the site. The erection is going on satisfactorily. In regard to the Matangara Road the foreman was instructed to straighten it up and metal the worst patches. The report as a whole was then adopted. CORRESPONDENCE.
The Commissioner of Taxes forwarded particulars of the procedure to be adopted in connection with the collection of income tax on debentures issued by local bodies. —Received. The minutes of a conference of local bodies held in Christchurch for the purpose of considering various matters in connection with the Motor Regulations Act, were revived. The clerk explained that one of the principal proposals was that registration should be effected every year and that tlie local bodies supply the number plates, in order to make it easier to trace the owners of cars after the cars have been removed from one district to another. —The let: ter was received. The town clerk, Hawera, wrote in reply to the council’s protest regarding the'Storm water on Tawhiti Road, stating that half of the storm water had been directed along Collins Street and the remainder would be dealt with in the new £20,000 loan proposals recently authorised.—lt was decided to again request the Borough Council to take temporary measures for diverting the storm water ->
The town clerk, Hawera, wrote inviting the council to send delegates to be present at a conference with Mr. L. Birks, Chief Government Electrical Engineer. in Hawera on Monday evening to discuss the matter of electric power supply. —Grs. Linn and Hawken were appointed delegates. The Public Trust Office, in reply to au application for £>sooo for replacing bridges and purchasing machinery, stated that owing to heavy financial commitments of the office the application could not be considered at the present time, and suggesting that it be renewed after May 1. —The clerk stated that he had replied pointing out that the council did not require all the money at once, but wanted sufficient to pay for the new lorry within two months. Mr. A. T. Wills wrote accepting the position as the council’s representative on the Repatriation Committee. Messrs. R. J. Ballantine and J. A. Kennedy, Normanby, wrote agreeing to provide the labor for the work on their road, subject to the supervision of" the engineer.—The matter was left in the; hands of the foreman and Cr. Linn,
