PERSONAL.
The appointment of Mr. Michael Clyde Barnett to be Assistant Public Trustee is announced. The appointment of the Hon. F. R. Chapman, who has resigned from the. Supreme Court bench, to bo Compiler of Statutes, is officially announced. Mr. F. W. Dawson, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Napier, has been appointed assistant manager at Auckland. Sir Francis Bell has taken over the Marine Department. There are still two portfolios previously held by Sir William Herries to be disposed of. These are! Native Affairs and Customs. A Wellington message states that Mr. A. S. Adams, at present Crown solicitor at Dunedin, will be appointed to fill the vacancy which will arise at the end of 1 the month through the resignation of Mr. Justice Cooper. Mr. James Cowan, who is writing an official history of the Maori wars, was in Hawera on Saturday. Mr. Cowan says that he is making good progress with the work, and that a large portion of it is awaiting the printer. Mr. Cowan will visit New Plymouth this week.
Mr. Frank Hutchens and Miss Hutchens left Hawera by the mail train on Friday for Auckland. Mr. Hutchens will leave by the Niagara, en route for London, early in April. Mr. Hutchens expeots to return to Sydney early next year and to viisit Hawera again at the end of 1922. It is probable that he will give a number of recitals in London during the English autumn.
