RACING IN AUSTRALIA. V.R.C. MEETING OPENED. BLUE CROSS WINS THE NEWMARKET. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received March 6, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, March 6. There was fine but blowy weather yesterday for the Victorian Racing Club's autumn meeting. The attendance was good, and the* going’ was a trifle heavy. The veteran Nickajack, ridden by an exNew Zealander, McGregor, created a surprise by finishing strongly and winning the hurdles easily from the fancied Tullilah. Nautical led all the way in the St. Leger, winding easily. Salitros got an indifferent start, and was last early in the race. Nautical now carries 7.11 in the Australian Cup. Nautical is owned by the breeder, Mr. James Wilson, of Bonnyvale. Eurythmic, who was last early in the Essendon Stakes, went to the front in the straight and won comfortably. This is Eurytkmip’s seventh win in eight Victorian starts. The time was slow. Eurythmic Is engaged for all the weight-for-age races at the meeting, and is trained by Holt, for the West Australian, Mr. E. Lee Steere. Great interest was displayed in the Newmarket Handicap, for which there were thir-ty-one starters. Tressady Queen, Blue Cross, and Lisnavane were prominent at the, start, while ai two furlongs Tressady Queen' Galtee Maid, Cetigne and Blue Cross were conspicuous. At the distance Lisnavane, Cetigne, Tressady Queen, Blue Crpss, Rostrum, and 1 Rathillet were the leaders, and these six horses had a chance at the half distance, when Blue Cross came up on the outside with a great run and won comfortably by a length. Rostrum, who beat Rathillet by half a neck, ran a godd race. Rathillet finished strongly. Couqdor ran disappointingly. Blue Cross won the last two Standish Handicaps, and is owned by Mr. Kellow, motor importer, and Js .(rained by Mr. Holt. Blue Cross was wen ridden by George Harrison. The time was two seconds outside the race record. Blue Cross was No. 28 outside. Isa finished first in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, and won well from the early leader, Antarian. Isa is trained by Mr. Scobie for the filly’s breeder, Mr. Ernest Clarke. Ste i ran the last six furlongs in Imln. 14%sec. Isa has incurred a ten-pound penalty in the Ascoa Vale Stakes. There was a great finish in the Brunswick Stakes, Wildun, who was fifth early in the race, just getting home in front of i’irst Democracy and Orula. Wildun, who has 7.4 in the Cup, is owned and trained by the oldtime jockey, Jim Saunders. z Salitros Las been scratched for all engagements.
