PENALTY FOR BOOKMAKER.
TWO MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. JUDGMENT DEFERRED IN SECOND CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Following on a police raid on his tobacconist shop, Arthur Owen appeared before Mr. Barton, S.M., charged with keeping a common gaming house. Evidence was given that a search of the safe resulted in twenty-four betting cards being found. One witness stated that, instructed by the police, he took two doubles with fendant and got defendant to write the horses’ names on a piece of paper, which was produced as evidence. No evidence was called for the defence. The Magistrate said he would be failing in his 4 after four previous convictions against defendant, leniency should be extended. Defendant was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Notice of appeal on general grounds was given, and the Magistrate fixed securities at £3O. Michael John O’Kane was charged with loitering in Peel Street for the purpose of betting. Counsel for the defence said defendant Jived in Peel Street, and he contended that if defendant was convicted on the evidence any’ resident of the same street could be similarly charged. The Magistrate said there was evidence that two bets had been made. He was not quite x-lear on the law regarding loitering on a street, and he would deliver judgment on Tuesday.
