HARBOR CHARGES INCREASED. TO MEET REVENUE DEFICIT. By ffelegraph.—Press Association. Tima.ru, Last Night. At a special meeting of the Harbor Board to-day it was resolved, Messrs Turnbull and Isaac dissenting, to increase the wharfage and port charges by ten per cent., to make a berthage charge of a halfpenny per ton (net register) per day, to increase the charge for rope* and fenders by fifty per cent., with a maximum increase from £l5 to £3p, and to make a harbor improvement rate of sixpence per ton on goods landed or shipped (except ballast and bunkering coal). A special meeting will be held on March 21 to adopt a by-law. The amended'charges are to meet an estimated de« ficiency in revenue of from £6OOO to £7OOO a year. Mr. Turnbull proposed a surcharge of 25 per cent, on all present charges, but strong opposition was shown to increasing the rate on firms.
