EX-SOLDIERS UNEMPLOYED.
PROTEST AT EMPIRE CONFERENCE. NECESSITY TO KEEP PLEDGES. ■. h'i * , By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 3, 11.15 p.m. Capetown, March 2. At the Ex-Servicemen’s Conference a motion in favor of ex-servicemen securing representation on the League of Nations was withdrawn after discussion. Mr. Leadley (New Zealand) moved: “That the Conference views with alarm and concern the large number of unemployed soldiers in certain parts of the Empire, especially in the Mother Country, and calls for the immediate
fulfilment of the pledges given to the men serving in the war t and earnestly prays the Conference of Empire Premiers in June to give immediate and close attention to the solution of the problem, and the prompt repatriation of ex-servicemen.” In the course of discussion delegates pointed out the difficulties of getting the large number of men re-established, and the work already done by Lord Haig and the various associations in that direction. Mr. Dyett (Australia] urged the special difficulties un'ler which Britain was laboring, and moved the deletion of the words ‘'especially in the Mother Country.” Mr. Leadley said that New Zealand appreciated Britain’s difficulties, but he contended that she ought to have done more for ex-servicemen. For the sake of unanimity he accepted the amendment, and the resolution was carried.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
