EMIGRANTS FROM BRITAIN.
LARGE INCREASE IN NUMBERS. CAREFUL SELECTION MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. _ Received March 3, 9.5 p.m. London, March 2. The emigration returns show a considerable revival, being 285.000 for 1920, compared with 147,000 in 1919. Canada took nearly 119,000, and Australia and New Zealand nearly 40,000. The total for the Empire was 198,000, and for the United States 77,000. The House of Commons adopted the supplementary estimates for overseas settlements. Mr. L. C. Amery (Under-Secretary for the Colonies) stated that emigrants were carefully selected in consultation with the Dominions, and there was no idea of “dumping’’, because the Dominions had their own unemployed. Labor critics declared the scheme amounted to the banishment of some of Britain’s best men.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
