WATERSIDE CRISIS.
46 VESSELS IDLE. EARLY SETTLEMENT UNLIKELY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 1. The reply of the Waterside Workers’ federation to the demand for assurances made at Saturday’s conference has not, yet been received and it is feared that a settlement will not be reached this week. Forty-six vessels are now idle at .Wellington, the total tonnage being 1.43,$3l tons. POSITION AT AUCKLAND. MOST OF THE MEN IDLE. Auckland, Last Night. There were no fresh developments on <he Auckland waterfront to-day. A general meeting of watersiders will be held for the purpose of considering lyarious aspects of the dispute. The number of watersiders employed Son the wharves has gradually been de- ■ creasing, until now only about 200 are working daily, out of a total of 1400. Some 200 men have accepted employment elsewhere.
