FIRE BRIGADE CONFERENCE. VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR. Napier, Last Night. The -forty-second annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand opened here this morning, the president, Mr. C. Goodwin (Akaroa.) presiding. There were 130 delegates present. In welcoming the delegates, the president mentioned that the executive had been successful in securing a grant of £lOOO from the insurance council, and an increase in the subsidy from the Government from £3OO to £lOOO in tTie demonstration year, and £5OO in the conference year. _ The report of the executive reviewed the work of what was termed the most successful year in the association’s history. Inspector Hugo attended the conference and indicated that he would have something to say at a later period. The grant to sub-associations for running a demonstration in the “off” year was fixed on the basis of £1 for £1 up to £5O. Mr. T. J. Watt, secretary, was appointed tratelling advisory superintendent.

The remainder of the business to-day consisted of making alteration to the. rules and attending to other formal matters.
