YEARLING SALE. HIGH PRICES REALISED. ‘ Wanganui, Last Night. At the G. M. Currie’s annual sale of thoroughbreds, twelve yearlings by Absurd realised over ten thousand guineas, the highest price being fifteen hundred guineas, paid by Mr. A. B. Williams for a sister to Humbug. It is generally considered, these yearlings were the finest lot ever offered in the Dominion. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Concluding day at Wanganui. Opunake weights are due on Thursday. The postponed Wanganui trotting meeting concludes on Monday. There wasn’t the semblance of a fluke about Lovematch’s Cup victory on Tliursday. Oratress never threatened danger in the Wanganui Cup, and pulled up lame. Tamatete made hacks of her opponents inj the Juvenile Handicap, but only paid a Gloaming dividend. Nursing Sister moved very scratchily at Wanganui, and looks as if she could do with a spell. Coolpan’s owner had a "plug” on Thursday, but the roguish son of Cooltrim refused to do his best. Simon was responsible for the—pace set in the Wanganui Cup, but four furlongs from home he got the stitch badly. "Dave” Cullinane is like George Washington. He cannot tell a lie! which accounts for the short price returned by his mare, Crucelle, in the Stewards’ Handicap. Silver Link ran a sterling race In the Flying Handicap, beating all but Early Dawn, who was in receipt of 291 b. The winner showed remarkable improvement on recent efforts. Zola’s victory in the Westmere Hurdles was very popular, and the old torse got a fine reception on returning to scale. Thanks to the weakness of his Opponents he was able to run the two miles right out. Old Client again ran a slashing race in the Wanganui Cup (which he has 1 won twice), and his local admirers handled a very nice second dividend when he followed Lovematct home. Hautawa and ,-Falstaff were made too much use of in the Westmere Hurdles, and both were dog tired when they fell. There was heavy. backing for Halifax in the Victory Welter, but the favorite had no chance with Askari, who had the race in safe keeping a long way from home. Ngcta was saddled up twice on Thursday, registering a first and a third—the latter with a 71b penalty. He 'is in fine fettle now, and should go on winning. The Jackson Stakes, run to-day, appears to be another soft thing for Gloaming. Although tote figures suffer, the public dearly loves to see a champion in action—when' he Is let run along! Down in Wanganui they backed All Cerise as if the Petre Hack Handicap was all over, but she was never in the picture. Marble Bar led to the turn, and then gave way to War Baby, who easily from Royal Exchange. The latter should do better next start. Kinsem' finished up favorite in the Flying Handicap, but had a bad passage, and finished just outside a place. She will strip a better filly to-day, and will again be favorite. At the end of the mile in the Wanganui Cup Idle Talk was a bad last, but he made up a lot of ground in the run to the judge's box, and was fourth, together with Marqueteur. Punka was badly galloped on during the running of the Cup, and an inquiry was held into the incident, which was found to be accidental. Her party did a big "parcel” on | her. Wanganui-owned horses had a good innings on Thursday, Crucelle, Zola and Tamatete Winning races, while Client, Khartoum and Amber Tips earned place money. From all accounts the Wanganui Jockey Club is reluctant to vacate their present site, but the crowding and congestion on the stand and around the tote on Tliursday points to some big alterations, if not a move, being decided on . very shortly. Bonny Rill (Bonlform —Rill) is a nice cut of a filly, but she is still growing, and will require time.
Inah .(Deeley) flattered her supporters for a few furlongs in the Flying Handicap, but Early Dawn and Silver Link made her look like a hack when they sailed past her at the turn. Listowei knocked himself out by bolting prior to the Flying Handicap, but he may do better to-day. He looks in great heart. Wanganui’s idol, Client, has contested five Cups in the Pi 1 ver City, and' has two firsts, a second, and two fourths to his credit. A geod ’un is old Client.
Taranaki sports rolled up In full force at Wanganui on Thursday, but there were fewer cars than usual from Palmerston North and Feilding. The threatening weather and fears of a postponement kept many away. Torrential rain fell in Wanganui on Wednesday, necessitating the postponement of the trotting (meeting, but it is expected that the gathering will be largely attended, and a success made of it. The Wanganui Trotting Club is a live body, and deserves better luck.
