(By “Moturoa.”) The Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn u citing opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. To-day’s Cup will be the fortyseventh, the race having been Initiated in 1875, and judging by the first-class field carded for to-day's contest the race is a popular one with owners of distance horses. Unsettled weather has prevailed in Wanganui this week, but the Wanganui race tracks stand rain well, and provided the weather clears, a memorable tussle may be expected. The records of the race fairly bristle with tlie names of famous stayers, and the present generation will remember the victories of Douglas, Advance, Nonette, Uhlando, Kilmarnock, Merrlvonla, Sinapis, Colonel Soult and Client. Dudu won three Wanganui Cups, and Resolution and Client each scored twice. Today’s field will contain two previous winners, Client (1917 and 1918), and Dusky Eve (1919). Dusky Eve holds the time record, 2min. 59sec., and Dudu the weight-carrying record, 9.2. Arthur Olliver won the Cup on Truce (1907), Milan (1910), Merrironfa (1911), and Bronze (1912). Bob Derrett scored on Betrayer (1880), The Poet (1884), and Lady Zetland (1895). Tommy Belcher, George Matthews. Mark Ryan and Harold Young were each successful twice. Neither H. Gray nor B. Deeley have won. It, and the Reids have yet to break their ‘'duck” In this respect. To-day’s Cup Is the richest stake ever offered by the Wanganui Jockey Club, being worth 1600 sovs. (1500 aors. and a cup valued at 100 sovs.. the gift of Mr. G. F, Moore), and it Is only fitting tint a good field should line up for such a. valuable prize. Fourteen horses have been paid up for, and possibly a dozen will go to the post. Down in Wanganui the most discussed candidates are Oratress, Punka, and Maioha, and the last-named 1* the eleventh hour favorite. Silver Link, Inah, Listowel, and Kinsem Will ail have big followings in the Flying Handicap, and the chances of the two light-weights look bright In view of the likely holding track. Others that will be well backed during the day are Valencia, Voluble, Ngakanui, Passenger, Tamatete and Festive.
