DISTRICT NEWS.
MATAU. (From’ Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. C. H. Short, who has held the position of schoolmaster here for the past year, has received notice of his transfer to Puketawa. Mr. Short has proved himself both an efficient and popular teacher, and his promotion is the district’s loss. The committee appointed by the Stratford County Council to consider and report on the advisibility of absorbing the Matau district into the County of Stratford visited Matau last Wednesday and inspected the roads and bridges throughout the district. The party consisted of Mr. Walter (chairman Stratford County Council), Messrs. Anderson and Weir (councillors), and Mr. Spence (county engineer). The visiting party were accompanied on their tour by, Messrs. Kennington, Fletcher, Nelson and Harrison, of the Matau Ratepayers and Settlers Association. The visitors expressed their surprise at the excellent state of the roads and the country generally. A meeting of the Matau Sports Club was held on Saturday evening. Owing to lack of interest and enthusiasm, the meeting was adjourned. Tile Annual School Picnic and distribution of prises will be held in the school grounds on the 2.3 rd Inst. The picnic will be followed by a dance in the evening for the young folk. A fair amount of stock has already left the district for the works, one drove containing about 900 head.
