BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. February 22. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held laiot evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) and C‘rs. R. H. Cameron, W. H. 11. Young, J. H. Thompson, A. Stewart, T. Lawson, C. Jackson, W. J. Newton, C. B. Walsh, and S. B. Hunter. The council went into committee to consider what remuneration should be voted to Mr. E. F. Hollands in consideration of his extra duties while‘acting in the capacity of borough works engineer. On resuming in open council it was reported that the council had decided to pay Mr. Hollands a sum of £75, part of which was payment for four weeks’ holidays due to him. The Mayor referred to the necessity of providing a rest-room for women and children in a central position, and suggested that the council should purchase the lease .of one of the sections in the railway reserve on Broadway for this purpose when they were put up for auction next month. After discussion a motion was passed authorising the Mayor and town clerk to bid for one of the sections when the leases w r ere submitted to auction.

The Mayor moved that applications be called for a working foreman with a good knowledge of drainage and waterworks at a salary of £6 per week. He said that he had come to the conclusion that to engage an engineer was not a payable proposition until the council Rad some money to spend. Cr. Newton seconded the motion. Cr. Jackson opposed the motion. He advo< cated that an engineer be obtained straight away at a salary up to £5OO a year. On the motion o 4 Cr. Thompson, seconded by Cr. Young, an amendment was carried that a report be submitted by the works committee at the next meeting. In accordance with a notice of motion, Ci’. Jackson and carried unanimously after a discussion.

OUTBREAK OF FIRE. An outbreak of fire occurred , in Stratford shortly before 2 o’clock this morning, as a result of which a woodshed, belonging to Mr. L. D.'Webster, Hamlet Street north, was totally destroyed. The fire was a comparatively small matter and the damage done did not amount to a great deal, but the outbreak demonstrated rhe value of the continuous telephone exchange service now in operation in Stratford, by enabling the members of the brigade to be’summoned by telephone. Another feature of the fire was the fact that at the time it was noticed the electric light was cut off throughout the borough and much eonfusion was caused through the brigade having to turn out in the dark. Subsequently the light was turned on at the hydro station. Mr. L. C. Vicary, borough Electrical engineer, expla ind that the reason why the light was cut off at the time was on account of th? low state of the river, and much as he regretted the necessity for filing so, it was impossible to keep th? hydro station going continuously until, more rain came. A man Wat?, however, kept continuously!at the hydro station, and in the case of a fire or at the request of a doctor rfc the hospital authorities, the light could be turned on within a minute or so.

The production is lavish and spectacular, while much of the inimitable Barrie humor and his whimsical touches are apparent throughout. A cast of proven players headed by Thomas Meighan and Gloria Swanson interpret the leading characters.
