PROPRIETORS’ ASSOCIATION. THE ANNUAiTmEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand was continued to-day. An application by the Drapers’ Federation to send a representative to address the meeting in reference to cables about falling prices,. circulations, and advertising charges, was received and considered. Owing to the crowded agenda it was resolved that the federation be asked to place its representations in writing, when they would be considered.
Applications from newsprint representatives were also read, and it was decided that they be asked to place their views in writing. Sir George Fenwick reported for the papermills committee and addressed the members on the advantages of having newsprint made in New Zealand, and quoted from the reports of the Director of the Forestry Department on the timber areas of New Zealand. He moved the adoption of the report. Mr. H. Horton seconded the motion, and addressed the meeting, as did the chairman and others.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—‘President, Mr. C. Earle; management committee, Messrs. P. Selig, H. Horton, C. S. Smith, W. J. Blundell, J. Coombe, E. Abbey Jones, and F. Pirani; paper committee, Messrs. P. Selig, L. Blundell, Robert Bell, R. J. Gilmour and F. Pirani; advertising committee, Messrs. A. D. Seabrook, W. Easton, G. C. Codlin, J. Coombe, and F. Pirani; labor and awards committee, Messrs. A. Sando, G. C. Codlin, A. G. Anderson, W. C. Weston, and F. Pirani.
Sir Geo. Fenwick spoke at great length on the valuable service rendered by Mr. Selig, and moved: “That the members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand record their grateful appreciation of the valuable services rendered them by Mr. Selig, who has occupied the position of president for 13 years. Mr. Selig has given his time in unstinted measure /o association affairs during that long period,, and it was largely due to his energy and care that the association has proved of very great value to its members.’ Mr. Coombs, in seconding the motion, expressed the appreciation of the provincial proprietors for the help and counsel afforded them by Mr. Selig. He was followed by Messrs. Henry Horton, C. Earle and Pirani, who also eulogised the retiring chairman and his work. The motion was received enthusiastically. A hearty vote of thanks was also accorded the secretary (Mr. L. J. Berry) for his work.
Representatives of the Board of Trade, Messrs. McDonald (chairman), and Collins (secretary), waited upon the association to discuss the newsprint question, and Messrs. Earl and Selig outlined the position of the newspapers.
