EDUCATION BOARD.

NEW SECRETARY APPOINTED. Mr. H. J. Thornton, assistant secretary to the Wanganui Education Board, was yesterday appointed secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, in place of Mr P. S. Whiteombe, who retires from the secretaryship in April, after twentytwo years’ service. There were twenty-nine applicants for the position, the number being narrowed down to two at the last meeting of the board, and yesterday the final selection was made'. Mr. Thornton, who is twentyeight years of age, joined the Wanganui Education Board’s staff as junior clerk in 1909, being promoted assistant accountant in 1911. and two years later he was given the position of accountant. In 1919 he took the position of assistant secretary, which he now occupies.

Mr. Thornton takes up his duties in New Plymouth on May 1.
