’BUS OR TRAMS.
QUESTION OF BETTER SERVICES. COUNCIL ADVISED TO WAIT. The matter of securing an additional electric ’bus for the suburban service was mentioned by Cr. W. F. Short at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council, and in bringing forward the proposal he remarked that the trams extension at present seemed to be out of reach. He also mentioned that the present ’bus was earning good revenue.
The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) advised Cr. Short to give notice of motion of the matter, to be dealt with at next meeting.
In speaking on the subject, the electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) pointed out that he had just received advice that the price o w f electrical supplies had dropped fifteen per cent., and steel had declined considerably. In view z of this, he thought that perhaps within the next seven or eight months the council might be able to regard the question of tramway extensions in a more favorable light than they had been able to up to the present. It might be worth waiting for that period instead of installing another ’bus. Cr. R. L. Parkin: “The money market has got to ease also.” The Mayor expressed the opinion that if possible something should be done in the direction of providing a more satisfactory service to Westown. Eventually it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor and Cr. Short, that the engineer be requested to submit' a short report on the question generally. In reply to Cr. V. Griffiths, the Mayor said this would apply to both suburbs.
