Mr. W. H. Cook (engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council) left yesterday morning to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Engineers at Christchurch.
Cr. W. F. Short was elected DeputyMayor at a meeting of the New 'Plymouth Borough Council last night, vice Cr. F. J. Hill, who is en route to England on a holiday trip. A Hamilton telegram reports that Mr. Robert J. GWynne, editor of the Waikato Times, died suddenly yesterday, die was sitting in his chair, when he pitched forward and died without warning. He was one of the best known men in the province. The late Major Neale was buried at Hawera on Sunday with full military honors. There was a large following of returned soldiers and citizens, thA service at the graveside being conducted by Mr. N. Caplen (in the absence of the Rev. R. Franklin). The funeral marches were played by the Citizens’ Band, the firing party and bugler being returned soldiers.
The Hawera Star’s Manaia correspondent writes: “It is with deep regret that I have to record the death of . Mr. F. C. H. Winter, which took place at the residence of his son, Mr. F. C. Winter, of Manaia. on Friday. Mr. Winter was a very old identity of Wairarapa, and lived in Masterton for many years, in which place he was, held in very high esteem. For the past twelve months he has been staying with his son at Manaia.”
A very old resident of Auckland has passed away—Mrs. Burrell, relict of thelate Captain N. C. H. Burrell, who predeceased his wife nine years ago. The late Mrs. Burrell arrived from England in the ship City of Manchester in the year 1864, her husband being captain of the ship at the time. On his arrival he resigned his position, and they remained in New Zealand. Mrs. Burrell was a well-known figure in the Trinity Church, Devonport, Auckland, and took a keen interest in church work. She was also secretary of the Mothers’ Union. She leaves four sons to mourn their loss: Messrs. A. B. Burrell (Hawera), H. E. Burrell (Auckland), C. M. Burrell (Wanganui), and T. V. Burreß (Albany). She spent the last few years of her life with her eldest son in Hawera.
