SCARCITY OF SUGAR.

RELIEF FOR TARANAKI TO-DAY. For some time past there has been another marked 'shortage of sugar throughout Taranaki, and this week opened with the market practically bare. The shortage was particularly inopportune, for the jam-making season has increased the demand for sugar. However the position will be relieved today. when the Rarawa arriveS from Onehunga, for advice was received from Auckland yesterday that a good supply was being forwarded. The exact quantity was not stated, but it is thought there will be sufficient to meet the district’s present requirements, A telegram from Wellington says the Hon. E. P. Lee (President of the Board of Trade) states that a further 1000 tons of sugar has been purchased from Australia to relieve the shortage in New Zealand. An early shipment is being arranged.
