LABOR IN BRITAIN.
UNEMPLOYMENT AND HIGH PRICES WORKERS ACCEPT LESS PAY. By Talegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright Received Feb. 20, 11.5 p.m. London, Feb. 19. The South Wales miners’ conference passed a resolution declaring that if the Government refuses to put into operation the Labor Party’s unemployment policy drastic steps will be taken within a fortnight. One hundred and forty employees, representing ninety-five per cent of the labor of a Lancashire firm of embossers and finishers, requested a reduction of ten per cent in their wages, involving the surrender of 2s 6d to 15s weekly. They expressed a hope that the offer would be accepted, as the prsent high cost of living exists primarily owing to the high .cost of production, and they also hoped the example would be followed throughout the country in order to decrease the cost of living. The company, in accepting the offer, announced that' the charge for finishing will be reduced ten» per cent to firms undertaking to give customers the benefit of the reduction.
A number of Birmingham boilermakers also agreed to a reduction of ten per cept in order to enable the trade to .cope with foreign competition.
