A cable from Paris says Puccini’s reported illness is denied. He is enjoying the best health. Airs. Arthur Heather, a very old and well-known resident of Auckland, died on Friday. Air. H. D. Heather, chairman of the Auckland Harbor Board, is a son. Lieutenant-Colonel J. L. Sleeman, 1.G.5., Director of Military Training, whose term of engagement with the Defence Department ends shortly, leaves for England in April. , Air. W. T. Jennings, M.P., arrived in New Plymouth from Te Kuiti on Saturday, after a smart motor run of six hours. A cable from London says it is understood that Sir Gordon Hewart, K.C., Attorney -General, has accepted the position of Lord Chief Justice, rendered vacant by tbo appointment of Lord Reading as Viceroy of India. Mr. G. W. Smith, of the Wairoa branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will succeed Air. A. J. Dixon as manager of the branch at Alarton. Air. Smith was some years ago in the bank at Bulls.’ Air. Dixon has been transferred to Napier. Dr. T. W. Leys, formerly editor of the Auckland Star.,is returning to New Zealand from England by the Orontes, says ft cable from London. The message adds that Dr. Leys is taking a valuable collection of pictures for the Auckland Art Gallery, including Collier’s ‘■Fallen Idol,” and also a Tisson picture presented by Lord Leverjhulme.
