PACIFIC MANDATES.
THE CONTROVERSY OVER YAP. AMERICA AND JAPAN DISAGREE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Received Feb. 18, 11 p.m. New York, Feb. 17. The New York Times’ Washington, correspondent says it is understood that following upon the receipt of the draft of the mandate over the islands of the Northern Pacific the United States cannot recognise that part covering Yap, and it appears there is also amongst the Allied nations themselves a difference of opinion concerning the exact status of the islands. It is believed, judging from the attitude of Republican leaders in the Senate, that the incoming Administration will uphold the contentions of the State Department respecting Yap. It is understood that Japan is holding to the letter of the mandate and has received Britain’s support, by reason of prior pledges given to Japan, but Japan would accede to America’s demands provided Britain will allow Japan’s nationals to enjoy the rights in islands of the South Pacific that these nations enjoyed under German rule. — Aus.-N.Z.
