WRECK OF THE OMAKA.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUIRY. VESSEL QUITE SEAWORTHY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A nautical inquiry was held to-day before Mr. Hunt, S.M., and two assessors, regarding the loss of the auxiliary schooner Omaka at Wellington Heads on January 30. Evidence was given to the effect that the weather was caln? when the Omaka left Blenheim, but she ran into heavy weather when nearing the heads. The vessel was quite seaworthy at the time The Wairau and the Baden Powell passed through the heads about the time of the disaster, and the look-out saw no sign of men or wreckage. The struggles of men clinging to the wreckage were seen from Pencarrow lighthouse, but it was impossible to Counsel commented on the fact that a keen look-out was not kept on the Wairau or the Baden Powell, and also on the lack of facilities in the ease of such occurrences as the loss of the Omaka The decision of the court will be given to-morrow.
