From the tone of the remarks made by the Mayor at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, on the question of motor traffic, motorists will be wise if they become conversant with the provisions of the by-laws relating to motor traffic, and observe them strictly. The said he had communicated with the sergeant of police, and the police were co-iterating with the borough inspector in enforcing the by laws, more particularly in regard to excessive speed along Broadway. Another matter .wkich the police were interesting themselves in was crowding on footpaths, notably in front of the picture theatre.
Good progress is being made with the work of erecting the cottage for the cemetery caretaker, which is being done under the Borough Council’s housing scheme. The Mayor stated at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council that the work was being done by day labor, and if this method proved the cheapest it would be adopted in. connection with the other houses to be erected under the scheme. Mr. C. D. Sole, chairman of the Stratford Hospital Board, is interesting himself in a proposal to have a St. Helen’s maternity nurse stationed in Stratford. He is at present in communication with the Health Department and other Hospital Boards regarding the matter. Mr. P. Skoglund will represent the local branch of the Welfare League at the conference of the league, which opens at Wellington on Thursday. A. fire broke out in the power house attached to the King’s Cinema Theatre this afternoon, and as a result considerable damage was done to the switchboard and connecting -wires. The building was very little damaged, the fire being extinguished before it had obtained a serious hold. As the company generates its own electricity, the fire may have had serious results in cutting off the supply of current for the theatre, but the work of repairing the damage was expedited as much as possible, and the theatre was able, to open as usual to-night.
SWIMMING CLUB’sXIRNIVAL. The committee of the Stratford Swimming Club met last night, for the purpose of furthering the arrangements in connection with the club’s carnival, which is to be held in the school baths cnaThursday, February 24. ft was reported that there had been an excellent response to the appeal for trophies, the generosity of the townspeople resulting in trophies being donated for every race on the programme. It was decided to distribute posters giving particulars of the various events. Entries will close on Monday, February 21, and will be received by Mr. F. D. Gaffaney. or the caretaker at. the baths.
