RATES ON NATIVE LAND.
DIFFICULTIES OF COLLECTION. INSTANCE AT ROTORUA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Rotorua, Last Night. The East Coast Parliamentary Party this morning had a conference with delegates from the Chamber of Commerce, County Council and Farmers’ Union. Local speakers urged the necessity of a workable system' of local government for the town of Rotorua, whereby residents might control the town affairs. They also stressed the need for the settlement of Croflrn and native lands, and more effective methods of collecting rates on native lands. Tt was stated that on a block of 100,000 acres of Maori lands rates on the unimproved value amounted to £520, and only £3 had been collected.
