STRATFORD.

Taranaki daily ncws. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication should be left at the office of the local representative, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION February 12. Among the numerous leagues and associations which are in existence in Stratford it is noticeable that there is no league or association of ratepayers working in the interests of the town. Such an association is badly needed in the borough and the present is a most opportune time for one to be formed. There are many matters of moment which such an association could interest itself in and thereby assist the Borough Council and other organisations in carrying out works calculated to make Stratford a more attractive place for visitors and a more desirable town to live in. Frequent complaints are heard that the present members of the Borough Council are a “poor lot,” but unless the ratepayers themselves take a greater interest in municipal affairs than they have in the. past, they will have only themselves to blame if there is no improvement after the next elections. A ratepayers’ association, to be a success, should be representative of every portion of the borough and should consist of men who have the interest of the town thoroughly at heart. The association should be formed, not with the idea of criticising the Borough Council or dictating to it what should or should not be done, but for the purpose of assisting the council with helpful suggestions. In other terms, ratepayers’ associations have operated with great success and there is no doubt that there is ample scope for such an association in" - Stratford at the present time. Whether it would be advisable for the association to nominate candidates for municipal honors, is a matter that would seed to be discussed, but it is certain that the fact that a live ratepayers’ Association was in existence would result in a good class of candidate "coming forward. The tendency nowadays is for the public to be apathetic in regard to municipal affairs and it is high time this apathy was shaken off and a live interest taken in the welfare and progress of the borough. SCHOOL EXCURSION. The annual excursion to the New Plymouth Breakwater, arranged by the Stratford School Committee, will take place on Thursday next. This annual event is much looked forward to by the public of Stratford as it affords them a splendid opportunity of visiting the beach with their families under the best of conditions. The Retailers’ Association have decided to close for the full day and it is expected that a record crowd will make the trip. Tickets are on sale at Messrs. Grubb’s, Foster’s arid Bellringer’s stores, and early application is recommended. Redeem the long-standing promise and have the photograph taken at McAllister’s Studio. We are always ready, day or night; no delay; no waiting either in taking or finishing, at this studio. Ring 25, Stratford. A typewriter for less than £2O, visible writing, two-color ribbon and with all standard equipment—such is the “Corona” typewriter, which is the last word in portable machines. The “Corona” is a boon to the busy business man, and an excellent investment for the aspiring typist. Come and see them at Wilson ißros.’, printers and stationers, Stratford.
