ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
CRUSHED AT GEAR WORKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 10. An accident occurred at the Gear meat works this morning, whereby a man named William Chambers had his leg crushed (from the knee downwards. He was shovelling coal from a truck when his foot got caught in the conveyor, and his leg was drawn in. He was removed to the hospital, and. had his leg amputated. His wife is coming from Home by the Corinthic, which is due shortly. SERIOUS GIG MISHAP. Masterton, Feb. 10. An accident occurred on the Carterton Road to-day, as the result of which a man, William Vine, and a four-year-old girl, the daughter of A. T. Jackson, of Masterton, were removed to the hospital. Vine and the girl were driving in a gig, and it is surmised the horse bolted. The screaming of the girl attracted a telegraph linesman, who found the gig jambed between a telegraph post and a fence. Vine was lying unconscious in the gig, and the little girl was jambed against the wheel. Vine is still unconscious. The girl sustained a fractured skull and Vine serious injuries to the leg and head.
