THE DAILY BREAD.
PROSPECTS OF WHEAT YIELD. AN INCREASE ESTIMATED. STRINGENT PURCHASE REGULATIONS. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. To-night’s Gazette states that’ the estimated average yields per acre of wheat and oats for the season 1920-21, compiled from reports furnished by stock in the stores of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, are as follows, the figures given being bushels per acre:— Wheat. Oats.
The average (estimated) for the Dominion for the season 1920-21 is wheat 28.52 and oats 33.86. The average (actual) for the Dominion for the season 1919-20 is wheat 32.66 and oats 38.75. In accordance ’ with the above estimates the total yield of wheat for the Dominion should be approximately 5,975,000 bushels, as against an actual yield of 4,559,934 bushels for the season 1919-20. The percentage of oats threshe| in 1919-20 was 34.79 of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year the total yield of grain should be approximately 5,520,000 bushels, as against an actual yield of 6,967,862 bushels for the previous season, but from the information so far available it would appear unlikely that the proportion of oats threshed this season will be as high as in the season 1919-20. The Board of Trade regulations controlling the purchase -of wheat were gazetted to-day and come into force as from to-day. These regulations make it unlawful for any person in New Zealand to purchase, offer, or agree to purchase, whether as principal or agent, save under a permit issued by the Wheat Controller, any wheat of the harvest of the season 1920-21 in New Zealand, or to be concerned in the fulfil; ment of any such purchase, whether made before or after the publication of these regulations. An option or right of purchase is to be deemed an agreement to purchase.
It is provided that in granting a permit under these regulations the Wheat Controller may impose such terms and conditions as to purchase and as to disposition or use of the wheat so purchased as the Controller thinks advisable for the due regulation and maintenance of the industries essential for the public welfare. Any such permit may be granted or refusecT"in the absolute discretion of the Wheat Controller, and shall be revokable at the will of the Controller When any wheat has been purchased under any such permit it shall not be lawful for the purchaser to deal with it otherwise than in accordance with the terms and conditions on which the permit was granted. The necessary powers of inquiry are given the Controller, and false representations to obtain a permit constitute an offence against the regulations.
