THE 11th REGIMENT.

NO DISBANDMENT PROPOSED. REPLY FROM MINISTER. In response io a telegram from Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., protesting against the proposed disbanding of the 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes (Minister of Defence) has replied stating that no disbanding of the regiment haa been proposed. The question of economising in defence expenditure will, the Minister says, entail the reduction of the territorial forces, but the Government hopes to preserve regimental traditions in the new scheme, and no question of amalgamation with other units will be decided without, consulting the regiments concerned.
