TARANAKI DAILY NEWS. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication should be left at the office of the local representative, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. 4 SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Stratford. Feb. 9. The Stratford School Committee met last night. Present: Messrs. J. W. Boon (chairman), E. G. Foster, D. M. Clarke, W. Pinhey and G. Smart, and Mrs. E. F. Hollands. The headmaster (Mr. F. Tyrer) reported that on the re-opening of the school on February 1, 54 pupils were admitted to the primary school and 09 to the high school classes. The average attendance for 1920 was 557 primary and 188 secondary,’a total of 745 for the whole school, and at present it seemed as if that attendance, approximately, will be maintained this year. Miss Davis (secondary department) left at the end of the year, and she has been replaced by Miss Knight, a highly qualified teacher. Owing to new regulations of the Education Department, Mr. R, Adlam, whose work in the school had been of a very creditable nature, had been transferred to the Central School at New Plymouth. Mr. Adlam was a very promising teacher, and he (Mr. Tyrer) was very sorry to lose his services. He was due to take up his new duties on March 1, and Stratford would have a temporary teacher until his position was properly filled. Misses Boon and Leech also left at the end of the year, their periods of training being complete, and Misses Leitch, Pratt and Smith joined the staff. Permanent instructors had now been appointed to take domestic science and woodwork classes in the technical school, so that evening classes in these subjects could be arranged. It was decided to ask the Cardiff, Pembroke Road Mahoe, Stanley Road and Bird Road Schools to join the excursion to the New Plymouth Breakwater on February 17. February 18 was appointed as a school holiday.
The caretaker (Mr. C. Rawson) reported that a new springboard donated by Mr. J. Robson had been placed in position at the swimming baths. The Stratford Swimming Club was granted permission to hold a carnival in the baths on either February 24 or 2G.
HOSPITAL BOARD. The Stratford Hospital Board met yesterday morning. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), R. McK. Morison, J. T. Belcher, R. H. Cameron. J. O’Neill, C. R. Finnerty and E. Martell. The matron (Miss S. G. Beedle) reported that the women’s ward had been cleaned and painted, and expressed the hope that the men’s ward would be similarly treated. There had been no reply to recent advertisements for a trained nurse.—Received. District Nurse Myers (Whangamomona) reported that during the past month she had dealt with sixteen cases —Received. The medical superintendent (Dr. Steven) reported that during January 39 patients were admitted, 29 discharged, and there were four deaths, 23 remaining in hospital at the end of the month. Twenty operations were performed under anaesthetics. There were five soldier out-patient attendances. The new X-ray plant "had been installed. There were several small troubles in working. A fault in the milliampmeter was remedied by Mr. E. F. Hollands, borough electrical engineer. In reference to the photographic plant, valuable advise was received from Mr. J. McAllister, who also made many suggestions as to the dark-room arrangements. Since the apnaratus was installed five cases had been successfully screened. —Received. The board decided to specially thank Messrs McAllister and Hollands for their help. Prior to the meeting the members paid a visit to the hospital, when the new X-ray plant and the new staff buildings were inspected.
