SWEARERS’ DISPUTE.
TROUBLE OVER WAGES. A DEADLOCK REACHED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A dispute has arisen between the Dominion Sheep-owners’ Federation and the shearers and shed hands concerning the wages paid to the pastoral workers for the 1921 season. A conference between the representatives of the parties took place to-day, but no decision was arrived at. The President of the Owners’ Federation (Mr. H. D. Acland) pointed out that there had been a large depreciation in the wool market and quoted the following offer to the shearers’ representatives in reduction of the present rates: Shearers £1 per WO; pressers £2 2s 6d weekly or Is 3d per hour; other shed hands £2 per week or Is 2d per hour; cooks £3 per week; cooks’ assistants £2 per week; the other working conditions to remain unaltered. The union delegates presented the following demands: Shearers £1 15s per 100; pressers £5 per week or 2s 6d per hour; all other shed hands £4 5s per week or 2s 3d per hour; youths £3 per week or Is 9d per hour; cooks £5 10s per week; cooks’ assistants £5 per week. A complete deadlock was arrived at, but the clainis are to be considered before the Conciliation Commissioner tomorrow.
