THE 11th REGIMENT.

PROTESTS AT DISBANDMENT APPEAL TO THE MINISTER. At a meeting of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association, a moi tion of protest was passed against the proposed disestablishment of the 2nd (Queen Alexandra) Mounted Rifles and the 11th (Taranaki Rifles) Regiment, on the grounds that the 2nd Regiment was the first volunteer regiment and the 11th is the only rifle regiment in New Zealand and was the first New Zealand volunteer regiment in action in the late war. It was further suggested that no regiment that has been on active service should be disestablished. The secretary was instructed to forward copies of, the resolution to th© New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association and the New Plymouth R.S.A. •Last night Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., sent the following telegram to the Minister of Defence: “Greatly concerned at report that the proposed defence reorganisation involves disbanding the 11 th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles). When before the Defence Committee last session I understood General Ohaytor to say. when answering my question, that in view of its hi&orical records this regiment would be retained. If the regiment is disbanded the public’s protest may militate against full success being reached in any scheme of reorganisation.”
