INGLEWOOD COUNTY COUNCIL
/ THE MONTHLY -MEETING. The Inglewood County Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. A. Corkill (chairman), R. Stuart, J. Hunter, M. S. Cameron, ’J. B. Simpson, J. M. Hair, and H. Jones. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr. G. S. Whiteside) reported as follows:Bedford Road Bridges.—Work has been continued on the ferro-concrete bridge No. 2 ov<?r the Waiongona River and the concrete work should be completed within a fortnight. New Ngatoro River Bridge.—The Government authority for £4OO £ Tor £ has been received. Ten tons of cement has been secured for a beginning to go on with, and a start will be made in about a fortnight or three weeks excepting the codicil directs otherwise. Tarring.—The Main Road between the Borough Council boundary and Dudley Road has been widened out with metal preparatory to tarring operations. Seventeen hundred gallons of prepared tar from Wanganui have been obtained with which to surface it. As soon as the otter preparations have been completed the work will be put in hand. Ratapiko Road.—With Cr. Hair I inspected the conical hill on the Makara Road, about 60 chains from Ratapiko Road. We found several promising outcrops of good shell rock. From these signs I would expect to find a considerable supply of good metal that could be procured from thia source. It, however, will require a good deal of prospecting and stripping to settle this conjecture beyond doubt. There would be aibout three-quarters of a mile of broken and steep clay road to pass over before reaching the nearest point on -'Ratapiko Road. This would be through private property, and bullock teams would be more serviceable for the work than draught horses. In the estimate I am allowing £lOO for improvements, etc., to the road giving access to the quarry pit. The estimate works out as follows:—’Road to pit, £100; preparing 130 chains road for metal, £260; 1500, cubic yards shell rock (nearly 12 cubic yards per chain) at 12s, £9OO. Total, £1260. - "'here is a Government grant for £ 300 appearing on the Public Works estimates for tils road. I would recommend that in the event of this work being decided upon that thd metalling be commenced at a point opposite to Mr. Hair’s woolshed, about 40 chains east of the Makara Road junction. This would ensure that the policy affirmed by the council of giving the last settler on the toad the full benefit of the metal, would be adhered to. : Motukawa Road Contract.—The metalling I contract on this road is progressing, tte con- * tractors having metalled half a mile. j Plant.—-Since last meeting there were an ; additional 26 yards boulders crushed on the j Junction Road at Maketawa River, 110 yards I' crushed and laid on Suffolk Road North, 246 yards boulders crushed on Suffolk Road South which was put on the Junction Road, and on t tl;e Mountain Road 388 yards boulders were ’ crust ed. In each case the crushed stone was laid and rolled on the roads to strengthen up waney places, and a portion dumped along the road at various places for future maintenance purposes. Machinery.—The new stone breaker and elevator and screen from Anderson’s, Christchurch, is expected about the end of April. The dump track is proving useful, having a great radius of action, and is required in several places at the same time. To get full efficiency from the new stone crusher another ’truck is essential. The report was adopted.
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter received from tte Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, dealing with various matters referered to by a deputation which waited on the Minister on Noy vember 11. Regarding the Autawa Road, he had promised the deputation that he would issue an authority for £5OO (£ for £) immediately, this being the amount provided on the current year’s estimates; also 'that he would issue a further £250 (£ for £) after March 31. Since then the council had submitted proposals estimated to cost £4BOO, and an authority for £5OO (£ for £) had been issued in respect to this work. Egmont Rond. —An amount of £lOO (£ for £) would be Issued on receipt of satisfactory proposals from the council. Mountain Road.—This matter was still under consideration, and he would advise the council further In due course. Cr. Sullivan pointed out that regarding the Autawa Road a mistake had apparently been made. The Minister’s secretary had informed tim the morning after the deputation had waited on the Minister that according to his shorthand notes Mr. Coates had promised £250 before March 31, and £250 after that date, making a total,' with subsidy, of £ 1000. It was decided to draw the Minister’s attention to the matter. GENERAL. Mr.' M. M. Bishop wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Derby Road bridges. Later in the meeting Mr. Bishop and three other ratepayers' waited on the council and expressed their willingness to raise a loan for the purpose of metalling the road and replacing the bridges. The secretary of the Taranaki Counties’ Conference notified that the council’s share of the cost of the new joint by-laws amounted to £139 9s 5d. —Account. passed for payment. Mr. H. Blackburn, Tarata, complained of the state of the Otaraoa Road to the county boundary, and stated that nothing had been done towards making the road safe for vehicular traffic.—Decided to reply stating that the work was being attended to. Seven ratepayers on the Everett Road wrote urging the necessity of proceeding immediately with the metalling of the Everett Road.—The matter was also referred to in the engineer's report, which stated the plant had been shifted to this road to complete the work begun last year.—Decided to reply accordingly. Cr. J. H. Lyon wrote from Auckland stating that he had penmanently left the Inglewood district and wished the council to accept his resignation without further delay.—On the motion of the chairman Cr. Lyon's resignation was accepted, and it was decided to express appreciation of his services to the council.—lt was resolved fhat steps be taken to fill the vacancy. The county clerk was appointed returning officer. The ranger reported that during the period from December 31 to February 5 he had im- . pounded 5 horses, 5 bullocks, 1 heifer and 3 cows, and had seized 12 horses, 28 cows, 2 bulls, 66 calves and 2 heifers, the total fees amounting to £8 9s.—'Received,
