TARANAKI MEETING TO-DAY. The. annual meeting of the Taranaki Trotting Club will be held on the Taranaki Jockey Club’s course at New Plymouth this afternoon. In their efforts to establish the sport the club have not been successful as yet in securing a totalisator permit, but no doubt liberal patronage will be accorded the gathering in recognition of the club’s work. 1 There should be some good racing, although the fields will not be large, and an enjoyable gathering should result. The New Plymouth Citizens’ Band will play a programme of music during the afternoon. AUSTRALIAN SCRATCHINGS. THE EGMONT MEETING. (Notes by “Moturoa.”) The Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting should attract large crowds to Hawera on Wednesday and Thursday next. The club has distri’ uted complimentary tickets very liberally, and visitors are expected from all parts of the .Dominion. The course and grounds are in first-class condition, and Mr. V. Stratton has everything in order for next week’s meeting. Horse-owners and trainers arc reminded that acceptances for the first day of the Egmont meeting close to-night at 8 pm. Mr. H. Coyle’s weights for the Egmont meeting should draw good acceptances, though there is little doubt that-'flelds both at New Plymouth and Hawera have (and possibly will have) suffered through the Easter meetings falling so early this year. At first glance Starland, winner of the Auckland and Takapuna Cups, appears to be leniently treated in the Egmont Cup, but Esperance and Warplane also have recent form to commend them, and the trio will come in for heavy support •if they go to the post. The Flying Handicap looks more open, but Infth, Chimera, Simonides and Estbonia are all well treated. In the Ohawe Hurdles nothing reads better than Explorer and Zola. It is hard to estimate the likely strength of the field in the Mere Mere Hack Handicap, buV it is likely to be a very large one. A dozen likely ones might be picked out as dangerous, but Irapuka, Automoana, Celmesia and Munition are all favorably treated. Quiniro, Gay Patron, and Skylight should trouble the field in the Apprentices' Plate, and the remark applies to La Paloma. Malingerer, and Voluble in the Waipapa Hack Handicap. TURF TOPICS. v The Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was a most successful affair, and visitors speak most highly of the splendid hospitality extended to them by the members of the club, and of the clean and interesting nature of the racing. Considering the present "tightness” of the money market the gathering was a most successful one. Gloaming is still "facile princeps” amongst the crack sprinters, and more "easy money” awaits h’.m at Hawera. Taranaki’s sportsmen dearly love to see a good horse in action, and whatever we may think cf the big- Welkin gelding’s plain appearance, all concede that be Is a wonderful galloping machine. Nothing stems’ a trouble to him. He just "lobs” along, and lifts first prize as if the winning of races was ineer child’s play. Much credit is due to his trainer, the one and only "Dick” Mason, for keepihg the gelding in such excellent trim.
Cup was a popular win. He Is a. great horse, and it is a thousand pities that unsoundness has prevented George Price frown doing as much with him as be could have wished. However, he won his race without tiie semblance of a fluke, and may show up again before next week closes. Surveyor, who ran so well under 9.11—a. stone more than ho won with the previous year—was by no means disgraced. In the absence of the pair. Marqueteur proved Cup running correct hy scoring In the Paul Memorial Handicap.
Tommy Rot proved as speedy as his party claimed, and he and Mockery stood out on their own amongst the two-year-olds seen out at the meeting.
Income was in fine form at New Plymouth, and his party enjoyed two fine dividends. They did not have it on their own. as report says that the gelding was heavily backed away from the course, tmd in one town not far from Palmerston the Warplane —lncom© "double” was backed down to
shorter odds than the totalisator paid. The much boomed Prince Willonyx was beaten into second place in the Gisborne Cup, but he should be all the better for the gallop. and should show up there to-day. Actifled, Multlye, Martini, and Jovial should run well !.n the minor events.
The Dannevirke Racing Club's autumn programme. advertised in this issue, is worth the perusal of horse-owners and trainers. Good stakes are offered all round, and entries close on Friday, February 11, at 8 u.m.
