MODERN MUSIC TEACHING.

It appears very revolutionary to announce the teaching of the piano in eight lessons by correspondence, as the bullivan Conservatorium ol Music, whose headquarters are at Premier Buildings. Auckland, has investigated the Sullivan system of teaching music, one finds it exactly what it is claimed to be, a quite new system of teaching the piano. The system is not for-people who desire to finger Chopin or Beethoven in eight lessons—such is impossible. But the Sullivan svstem may prove a boon to those who have not'had the advantage of musical education in their youth, and desire a simplified method of cultivating their latent musical ability. By the aid of the Sullivan music and the lessons by correspondence, they may in a very short space of time be enabled to play popular airs, thus aliasing themselves and making their homes gayer. The Sullivan music-sheet represents the keys of the piano, the two staves being merged into one, the black lines denoting the black keys and the notes in the white spaces the white keys. There are no sharps or flats in the new Sullivan system. Harmony and simple theory lessons are included in the course which is conducted by correspondence. Of the Sullivan system the well-known Cherniavsky Trio says: “The simplicity and comprehensiveness of the Sullivan system are all that your company claim for it, and we have no hesitation in saying that by it thousands of persons who would never have any musical knowledge will be able at small cost and trifling application to enjoy the pleasure and solace of piano and organ playinjj.”
