BIRTH AND DEATH RATES. INTERESTING COMPARISONS. A return of the estimated population of the Dominion of New Zealand on December 31, 1920, is given in the Gazette. was easily a record, being 1425 in excess c-f the previous highest figure (28.509 in 1016), and 5451 more than the abnormally low total for 1919 (24,483). Nevertheless the rate for 1929 (25.38 per 1000 of mean population) is th© fourth lowest, co, record, being higher than the rates for the years 1915, 1918, and 1919 only. With the xeception of the year 1918, when the deaths were increased by 50 per cent on account of the influenza epidemic, the number of deaths registered in 1920 was the highest on record. Tiie rate of 10.27 per 1000 of mean population was above the average of recent years, and higher than in any of the ten years 1908-17.
