HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated January 29, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: “Meat.—Market quiet. Supplies of good quality light, and prices firm for fresh killed*. Average prices are: Beef, Is 5Jd per lb; mutton, Is lOd per lb; lamb, 2s 2d per lb; imported, good trade. Noticeable shortage chilled beef. New Zealand ox, hinds realising about IOJd, fores 7|d per lb. Lamb, short “Butter. —Next Government distribution at £l4 18s 8d per cwt. (2s 8d per lb) wholesale, will be made on February 2. Trade notified that application need not be limited to two ounces ration basis. Irish in better demand al £l4 10s to £l5 10s per cwt. (2s 7d to 2s 9d per lb). Danish, market is depressed. Pufthases for United Kingdom continue to be made at falling prices. “Cheese. —Market quiet and steady. English, finest farmers, £8 to £9 per ewt. (Is 5d to Is 7d per lb), and there is fair demand for cheaper quality. Canadian, moderate demand at last rates (viz., £7 16s to £7 18s per cwt. approximately Is 4%d per lb) for white; and £7 18s to £8 per cwt. (approximately Is 5d per 1b) for coloured. New Zealand, Tainui shipment, is good quality, and will meet good market when available. Best coloured, spot, has been sold for £8 per cwt. (Is 5d per lb); white, £7 16s per ewt. (Is 4d nor lb). “Hemp. —Manila market is inactive, and prices are again lower. “J” grade, January-March shipment, sold at £53 per ton. Present quotations are:—Octo-ber-December to January-March shipments. £52 2s per ton-, February-April shipment. £52 per ton. New Zealand, idle. Hishpoints and fair afloat, have been sold for £5O 10s per ton. Present quotations are:—Sellers, highpoints, snot. £53 per ton: fair, £5l per ton: January-March shipment. £5l and £49 per ton respectively.
