ECHO OF MOTOR FATALITY.
DANGEROUS CORNER SUGGESTED. COUNCIL DISAGREES WITH JURY. In giving their finding regarding the fatal motor accident in (fill Street, New Plymouth, on New Year’s Eve, the jury added a rider expressing the view, that, in their opinion, the collision was largely tine to the dangerous nature of the street. The Justice Department, by direction of th? Minister, have forwarded a copy of the verdict to the Borough Council and the cbmmxiication was read at lastslight’s meeting. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said that he was personally interested in the case. He said the evidence for the defence did not come out at the inquest, but it would have been shown that no part of the accident was due to the street.
The following resolution was carried: The council being of the opinion that the street is perfectly safe, if reasonable care be taken, disagrees with the rider added by the jury to their verdict; and that, even if the opinion of the jury were correct, the financial position of the council is such that it could not possibly incur the very heavy expenditure which would be necessary to straighten the street.
